The Desert Ghost Ball Python, often abbreviated as DG, is a recessive ball python morph prized for its clean appearance, strong contrast, and tendency to maintain attractive coloration as it matures. While individual animals vary, Desert Ghost is often associated with a brighter, cleaner overall look that makes it especially appealing to both collectors and breeders.
Desert Ghost is a recessive genetic trait. A visual Desert Ghost inherits a copy of the Desert Ghost mutation from each parent. An animal carrying one copy is considered heterozygous, or het, Desert Ghost and does not visually express the complete Desert Ghost phenotype. This distinction is particularly important when choosing animals for a breeding project.
One of the biggest attractions of Desert Ghost is how it can complement other ball python genetics. Breeders have incorporated Desert Ghost into projects involving Clown, Pied, Hypo, Enchi, Pastel, Leopard, Yellow Belly, and many other genes. The resulting appearance depends on the complete genetic combination and the individual animal.
For pet owners and collectors, Desert Ghost can also be an excellent choice simply for its appearance. There is no need to have breeding plans to appreciate a beautiful visual DG.
